GOURD CARVING MADE EASY
With Betsy Roberts
Gourd carving doesn’t have to be as
difficult as it looks! In this class you will learn 4 complete
techniques during a single class. We will learn to do
“ripples/steps”, filigree, stone inlay, and beginning relief
carving. Learn to use the latest Tungsten Carbide Burrs to achieve
all of these effects. (Burrs will be provided for use during the
class and will be available for purchase.) Students who have taken
this class have a renewed zest and confidence in carving – which can
be easy for all. Students need to bring a gourd suitable for carving
(cleaned both inside and out) - the thickest gourd isn’t necessary,
but a fairly thick one works very well - a rotary hand tool capable
of holding "dremel size bits" and a dust mask. The most important
tool you can bring is a good sense of humor and willingness to have
fun and learn new easy techniques. Please bring a sack lunch and
drink.
-
Ages 18+

Roberts – Fri, Sept 26 10:00am-4:00pm
-
Location: Folsom City Park
-
Fee: $90 (includes all 4 techniques and use of burrs)

Peruvian Gourd
Carving
with Tito MedinaLearn how to use a traditional burin to carve images into gourds
with Tito Medina, from Cochas Chicas, Peru, South America.
Experience this unique opportunity to spend a day with outstanding
Peruvian gourd artist, Tito Medina. Using the most primitive of
instruments, a sharpened nail set into a wooden handle, Tito carves
minute figurative designs in the traditional style of the Huanca
Indians of Peru. He then colors his carved gourds by adding a paste
of oil and soot or lime, or by using a burning ember. This is a
rare experience that you won’t want to miss. Each student will
receive special Peruvian gourds and a handmade “burin” for carving.
